Black-Eyed Peas on Menu for New Year's Day

Updated: Tue 11:06 PM, Jan 01, 2013

New Year's Day wouldn't be complete without some people having their black-eyed peas.

It's a southern tradition that some say dates back to the Civil War, and is supposed to bring good luck.

Fish Daddy's in College Station usually doesn't have black-eyed peas on the menu, but decided to add it for New Year's.

And some customers were glad they did.

Bryan resident Jared Steward said, "For me growing up in the south, well being an Aggie and southern, if you do anything more than twice it's automatically a tradition. Growing up it was always supposed to be good luck and I can use all of that I can get. I ate all my peas and I'm going to stop and get a lotto ticket on the way home so hopefully it works."

And in case you didn't know, black-eyed peas are an excellent source of calcium, folate, and vitamin A, among other nutrients.
