The Boy Scouts of America reached a milestone--calling for a birthday celebration after the national organization turned 100.
To top it off, the scouts attempted to break a Guinness World Record for the "Most Simultaneous Model Rockets Launched." The current world record is 965 rockets. Saturday afternoon 3200 blasted off into the air.
Two years into the making, event organizers say it took lots of planning to turn the Texas World Speedway into a city. "We've spent nearly two years, over 700 volunteers, planning and putting on this amazing event that has 20,000 scouts and scout leaders participating," said Tom Varnell, president and organizer of Shac Jam.
Just to give you an idea of how big the event truly is, we had to take to the sky.
"And we're clear for take off and we're adding power," said pilot John Happ, who also happens to be a scout leader. More than 20,000 people are attending 'Shac Jam,' even camping out in tents for the weekend. Back on the ground, however, Cub scouts and boy scouts galore are partaking in a little history, entertainment and of course the tradition.
Brian Drieu has been scouting since the first grade--"In fact, I've been in boy scouts in two different states, in Texas and in Georgia."
Drieu is in 7th grade now and says he wouldn't miss this event for the world. "It's pretty cool, I got to try on that uniform right there and its almost as old as I am..."
Leaders like John Happ say it's important to carry out the scout tradition. "it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for not only guys my age but for the scouts that will remember this for the rest of their lives..."
Although Shac Jam will only last for the weekend, Happ says the scout traditions will carry on.
