Brazos County Health Department Offering Free Rapid HIV Tests

BRYAN The Brazos County Health Department is offering rapid HIV testing for free.

In a press release sent out Monday morning, the county-wide agency said the free testing would start Tuesday January 7th. Clients receive results from the test on the same day.

Testing will be available during certain times. Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. and on Thursdays from 8:30-11 a.m.

The Health Department says the testing is offered on a walk-in basis. No appointment is needed. A picture ID is required.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that health care providers test everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 at least once as part of routine health care. One in six people in the United States who have HIV do not know they are infected.

HIV is spread through unprotected sex and drug-injecting behaviors (plus mother to child), so people who engage in these behaviors should get tested more often.
