Bryan ISD is considering options for rezoning its attendance boundaries for area high schools.
A public hearing will take place Monday night in regards to the redrawing of its high school boundary lines for both Rudder and Bryan High Schools.
School officials say changes at the state level are forcing districts to look at ways to increase the efficiency of district operations while maintaining a priority on high academic standards. They say their goal is to balance future enrollment and create an "optimal learning environment" at each high school.
A map of the proposed changes shows an expansion of the current zone for Rudder High School to overtake what now is zoned for Bryan High. The Rudder southwest boundary which currently sits near Texas Avenue would shift further south to include parts of Downtown Bryan, following 28th Street and edging along Sandy Point Road and FM 1687.
Bryan ISD says the changes will lower enrollment at BHS slightly and increase enrollment at Rudder. Bryan Collegiate and Hammond Oliver students will not be affected by the measures. The district says elementary and middle school attendance zones are not being considered at this time.
The district has considered the issue of transfers. It says in cases where specific programs are offered at only one campus transfers will be allowed if space is available and other requirements are met.
Siblings would also be allowed to attend the same school simultaneously if an older sibling is currently attending a district that would be re-zoned. The district says an older sibling who has already graduated will not confer transfer status to a younger sibling. In the case of transfers, transportation would not be provided.
The projected enrollment changes would likely put both BHS and Rudder in the same UIL Classification for the next scheduled UIL realignment, and the district says decreased travel costs would result in a savings to the district of nearly $120,000 each year. It also expects an increase in revenue from ticket sales from those who are willing to travel shorter distances to watch extracurricular events.
If adopted, the proposal would first take effect in the fall semester of this year.
The forum to discuss the changes to the attendance zones will be held Monday, January 14th from 6-7 p.m. in the Travis Education Support Center Board Room at 101 N. Texas Avenue in Bryan.
