BRYAN - A murder indictment has been handed down for a local man accused of smothering his 79-year old mother with a pillow for drugs and cash.
A grand jury says there's enough evidence for Phillip Ortega to go to trial for the death of Velma Bryant.
Investigators say she was found dead in her home off Old Hearne Road back in April - and they say Ortega admitted he went into his mother's room while she was sleeping and smothered her - telling police he "just snapped" while under the influence of crack cocaine.
He remains in jail on a $99,000 bond.
