BRYAN - The Texas Department of Transportation’s 13th annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign kicks off this month. All local area Law Enforcement Agencies will be participating in the campaign and they will be focusing extra resources on issuing seatbelt violation tickets.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
-In 2012, 21,667 vehicle occupants were killed in crashes, 65% of those were MEN.
-Men ages 18-34 years old are less likely to wear seat belts and are at the greatest risk of injury or death.
-Sadly one if five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.
-In 2012, 3,031 additional lives could have been saved if all unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants 5 and older involved in fatal crashes had worn their seat belts.
-Seat belts save lives!

Remember, all passengers, even adults, in the back seat must be buckled up. Children younger than 8 years old have to ride in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches. Violations can result in fines and court costs up to $200.

Your local Law Enforcement agencies will join other Law Enforcement officers from across the State of Texas to step up enforcement of the state’s safety belt laws between May 19 and June 1, including the Memorial Day holiday weekend. We encourage all vehicle occupants to “Buckle Up."
