Construction crews are closing one of the busiest intersections in our area for the weekend.

Briarcrest Drive at 29th Street is part of that big Briarcrest widening project.

And some new water mains are going in this weekend.

While Briarcrest Drive will remain open to traffic passing straight through, plan on some major detours from 29th Street.

Briarcrest Drive is the busiest street in Bryan and while there is not a home Aggie Football game this weekend there is the Bryan High School Football game Friday night at Merrill Green Stadium.

Fans will have to get around those detours after the game.

Construction signs have been up this week warning of the upcoming closure.

TxDOT told News 3 Friday they picked this weekend to do the waterline work because there is not a home Aggie Football game and they didn't want to delay as Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaches.

Drivers we spoke with say they are prepared to find their way around the weekend delays.

"Oh yeah, I'm planning, I'm planning to try to avoid the area if I can unless I have to come up here. But it just kind of makes it a little difficult with work and everything, but other than that it's all right," said Bonnie Sowders, who works at Briarcrest Cleaners.

"This corner has been, the area here by the light has been a problem, and once I got hit here by a truck and I know how this congestion can be," said Patrick Lapaglia, a Bryan Driver.

The closure at 29th Street and Briarcrest Drive stays in effect until 6:30 Monday morning.

If you are heading northbound on 29th Street you can detour to Barak Lane to Kent Street.

Southbound 29th will detour west on Briacrest Drive to Kent Street to Barak Lane.

Drivers on Briarcrest wanting to go south on 29th Street will detour either Oak Ridge or Kent Street to Barak Lane, back to 29th Street south.

The entire $4.7 million improvement project is expected to be complete by August of next year.
