GLENDORA, Calif. - About 300 firefighters are on the ground, while half a dozen water-dropping helicopters and a DC-10 tanker are in the air battling a wildfire in the Angeles National Forest northeast of Los Angeles.

The blaze broke out near a campground yesterday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of campers and picnickers. It's grown to more than 4,100 acres, or roughly 6 square miles. Fire officials estimate it is just five percent contained.

Crews are getting some help from the weather, with only light winds blowing. The flames are moving deeper into a wilderness area away from any structures.

The cause is under investigation.

Another wildfire broke out Sunday in Ventura County in the Los Padres National Forest. Forest Service firefighters stopped its growth after it burned about 30 acres.

And in Northern California, firefighters are focusing on the rugged and remote northern edge of a fire that's been burning for weeks in Mendocino County. More than 1,600 firefighters are trying to contain the blaze. It's burned more than 65 square miles and is about 58 percent contained.
