A 36-year-old man in the Waller County Jail on burglary charges has been indicted after officials say DNA evidence indicates he murdered 67-year-old Carol Voekel of Brenham last year.
Michael David Covington was indicted Wednesday on capital murder charges and could face the death penalty.
Washington County District Attorney Bill Parham says Covington has been in the Waller County Jail on numerous burglary charges and is also wanted in Harris County for other burglaries. Parham says since the beginning, Covington has been the prime suspect in Voekel’s murder.
Last September, Voekel’s body was found by Brenham firefighters and policeman after they were called to her home because of a house fire.
Investigators believe Covington may have been burglarizing the house when Voekel walked in and discovered him. An autopsy indicated Voekel died of strangulation, with officials believing Covington started the fire to cover up the murder.
