Case Keeps Lawmakers from Tackling School Finance

AUSTIN, Texas -- There should be no shortage of school finance fights in the Texas Legislature this session.

Key Republicans will be pushing for expanding school vouchers, while Democrats will clamor to restore the $5.4 billion in cuts to public education passed in 2011.

But what likely won't come up is the court battle raging three blocks from the Texas Capitol.

That's where more than 600 school districts have sued. They claim the formula Texas uses to fund its schools is unconstitutional.

While a ruling in the case may come quickly, it will surely get appealed to state Supreme Court.

And the high court probably won't rule until the Legislature has adjourned for the summer.

That makes it the Legislature's fight next time. And both sides seem content to keep it that way.
