Temple police have confirmed one student was shot Tuesday morning at Temple High School and the school is on lockdown.
Temple police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox confirmed one male student was taken by ambulance from the scene to Scott and White Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound.
Wilcox said the student’s parents are with him at the hospital and that the boy, believed to be 15 years old, is in extremely critical condition.
Temple Independent School District officials said the gunshot was self-inflicted.
Wilcox said several teachers and staff members both heard and saw the incident and they were being interviewed by police Tuesday morning.
Grief counselors were on hand at the school to speak with both students and faculty.
Several patrol officers and an ambulance were sent to the scene at the high school gym at about 8:30 a.m., Wilcox said.
Temple High School was placed on lockdown just after the report of the incident, and would remain on lockdown until the scene had been processed, Wilcox said.
Wilcox said officers have recovered a weapon at the scene.
A school district spokesman said a soft lockdown was in effect, meaning no one can enter or leave the school.
Parents were being called, the spokesman said, and should not try to pick up their children.
The district issued a statement just before 9:15 a.m.
"A Temple High School student with a self-inflicted gunshot wound was taken to the hospital," it said.
"We have no further information and currently the school is under a soft lockdown. Please do not attempt to pick up your student at this time. School will continue as usual."
