BASTROP, Texas -- A monument to the half-million Texans who served in Vietnam is taking shape at a Central Texas foundry.
Groundbreaking for the Texas Vietnam Veterans Monument is set for early this year in Austin with installation on the state Capitol grounds by late this year.
The monument will be a 14-foot-tall bronze structure featuring five men representing the five military branches. Plans call for 3,417 dog tags to be entombed there representing those Texans killed in the war.
A clay model that will become the monument nearly fills the gallery at the Deep in the Heart Art Foundry in Bastrop, about 30 miles east of Austin.
Already the Capitol grounds has memorials remembering the Alamo as well as those who fought in the Civil War, both World Wars and in Korea.
