After obtaining documents submitted to Texas A&M University by James Holmes, the suspect in the deadly Colorado shooting in July, we are learning that the university was interested in bringing Holmes on board the graduate program.

The 24-year-old is accused of shooting a dozen people and wounding 58 others in a theatre massacre in July.

Before July, investigators say Holmes was in the process of getting his graduate degree in neuroscience.

Holmes also applied to Texas A&M’s neuroscience doctoral program.

According to documents we obtained, he submitted his application with references and his transcript in December of 2010 to the university.

The now murder suspect said in his application essay that he “aspires to become a cognitive neuroscientist.”

In emails between the Texas A&M Institute for Neuroscience and Holmes, the university expressed interest in February of last year saying, “The committee was very impressed with your application and would like to invite you for a visit.”

Holmes responded hours later saying, “I look forward to learning more about the program and accept the invitation.”

Arrangements were made for Holmes to come to Aggieland for an interview March 7th, but on March 1st, the university received and email from Holmes saying:

“I will be pursuing other interests and won't be coming for a visit, my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Once the sub-committee that handles graduate admissions with the university found out that Holmes declined the interview, one faculty member sent out an email saying
“too bad, we should have acted on him sooner.'

Holmes ended up studying at the University of Colorado at Denver.

He performed poorly and withdrew after the spring semester this year which is just before he was arrested for killing 12 people at an Aurora movie theater.

Texas A&M University officials say they are not commenting because Holmes was never admitted to the university.
