A complaint has been filed against Bryan ISD for racial discrimination in the way they discipline some of their students.
Two non-profit organizations, the NAACP and Texas Appleseed. say the school district targets black students by ticketing them for disorderly conduct.
The complaint says that police officers at Bryan ISD schools can issue tickets to students for "Disruption of Class" and "Disorderly Conduct.” This means if students misbehave, they get slapped with a ticket where they have to go to court and possibly pay hundreds of dollars.
The complaint says, chances for African America students getting these tickets is more than four times greater than the risk faced by students of all other races. It states in the 2011-2012 school year, 621 tickets were issued to students in Bryan I-S-D, 46 percent of those were issued to African American students but it didn't say where they got that information.
Bryan ISD says in the 2011-2012 school year they issued 509 citations. The year before that, 2010-2011, they issued 657. According to the district the number of tickets issued is decreasing. The district didn't have the number of tickets broken down by race.
Bryan ISD released this statement:
“Until we have fully reviewed the document, we cannot comment on its merit. We take the allegations seriously and will conduct an internal review to address the issues the complaint raises. “
