BAYONNE, N.J. Passengers aboard a cruise ship on which hundreds fell ill are recalling days of misery being holed up in their rooms and ruined vacations.
The Explorer of the Seas returned to its home port of Bayonne, N.J., on Wednesday after a Caribbean trip cut short when an outbreak of suspected norovirus sickened nearly 700 passengers and crew.
Sixty-one-year-old Bill Rakowicz from the city of St. Thomas in Ontario, Canada, says at first he thought he was just seasick. Then he says he left his room and saw people with gloves and "people sick everywhere."
He says he suffered from vomiting, pain and diarrhea and that his experience was simply "awful."
But he gives high marks to the Royal Caribbean cruise line for going "above and beyond" in its response.
