Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers made more than 1,000 DWI arrests during a Spring Break special enforcement period this year. The targeted DWI enforcement from March 8 – March 17 included additional patrol hours funded by a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant.
“With Texas’ status as a popular Spring Break destination, DPS is always concerned about drinking and driving during that time,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “These DWI patrols, without a doubt, help save lives, and we are grateful for the troopers who work every day to keep our roads safe.”
Of the 1,077 arrests, 226 were a direct result of the increased patrols. The TxDOT grant allowed troopers to focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations during the times when alcohol-related crashes are the most frequent.
DPS enforcement also resulted in more than 11,400 speeding citations, 1,600 seat belt/child safety seat tickets and 12,000 other citations. In addition, troopers made 552 fugitive arrests and 463 felony arrests during this time period.
