Daughter of Bryan Couple Aboard Stranded Carnival Cruise Ship

Updated: Tue 12:24 PM, Feb 12, 2013

It's anything but relaxing for some travelers from our area who are among thousands of passengers stuck on a cruise ship after a fire broke out in the engine room.

The cruise ship, owned by Carnival Cruise Lines, left Galveston Thursday and was supposed to return Monday.

Those on board are now waiting on two tug boats to take the ship to Alabama.

The fire erupted in an engine room early yesterday, knocking out the ship's propulsion system.

No one was injured and the fire was extinguished.

The ship has been operating on backup generator power since the incident.

We've learned that there are several passengers on board from our area and others that have family living in the Brazos Valley.

KBTX News 3 talked with Jim and Kay Smith of Bryan who's daughter Kelee Brister is on board.

"The communication was coming to us by text of about 10 or 12 words that was all we've gotten," said Jim Smith.

"Just that she's fine, don't worry, hug my kids tell them I love them," said Kay Smith about what her daughter told them.

The Smith's are heading to Houston to help Kelee's husband take care of their three children until Kelee gets back home.
