Distracted Driving Simulators Headed to High Schools and Colleges

Updated: Thu 8:42 PM, Mar 07, 2013

Texting and driving can kill you. It's as simple as that.

And to drive that point home, two portable distracted driving simulators will be heading to various high school and college campuses around the state to highlight the dangers associated with distracted driving.

Texas A&M's AgriLife Extension Service was awarded more than $20,000 from State Farm Insurance to buy the simulators.

The plan was unveiled Thursday afternoon at the Bryan office of State Farm agent, Brenda Keith.

The simulators are equipped with a steering wheel, gas pedal, and brake.

Drivers will get a text message and respond to that text, as something changes in front of them, like a pedestrian walking into the road.

Bev Kellner with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service says, "Distracted driving has become a very important issue, not just in the state of Texas, but around the country, and we are pleased that we'll be able to have these extra tools to address it."

The simulators will mimic actual driving experiences and conditions.

The DPS says cell phone use was a factor in more than 3,000 Texas crashes in 2011.
