MOODY (March 4, 2013)—About 30 firefighters from seven area departments and Texas Forest Service personnel were working to contain a wind-fanned wildfire Monday that earlier threatened five homes and forced several evacuations.
The threat to the homes ended Monday morning, officials said, and the residents who were evacuated overnight were allowed to return home.
The wildfire sparked by a campfire in a local park has burned about 175 acres and officials are concerned about the impact of gusty winds on efforts to contain it.
Texas Forest Service spokeswoman Mark Kay Hicks said the wildfire was only about 20 percent contained Monday morning, but by Monday night she said it was about 75 percent contained.
The fire is burning in a rugged area that makes it hard get bulldozers into some areas, she said.
Gusty winds were not only fanning the flames, but also blowing embers through the air, which were igniting new fires.
Firefighters from several departments including Oglesby, Flat, Moffat, and Gatesville responded to the fire Sunday at Iron Bridge Park adjacent to Mother Neff State Park in the Moody area.
Leon United Methodist Church on Meadorgrove Road was serving as a staging area where firefighters could go for water and rest.
