East Texas man with long record set to die Tuesday
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - - An East Texas man who'd been in and out of prison at least five times during the mid-1980s is set to die this week for the shooting death of a man during a home break-in more than 22 years ago.
Fifty-year-old Rickey Lynn Lewis faces lethal injection Tuesday evening in Huntsville for the death of 45-year-old George Newman and the rape of Newman's fiancée at their Smith County home.
At the time of the attack, Lewis was on parole for six months after serving 21 months of a 25-year term for burglary.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles last week refused a clemency request for him and the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to review his case. The execution would be the second this year in Texas.
