LAREDO, TX - A former U.S. soldier who pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy in South Texas and to planning a contract killing has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Senior U.S. District Judge George Kazen gave 30-year-old Kevin Corley of Columbia, S.C., consecutive sentences Wednesday in Laredo. Corley had also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.
Corley is the last of seven co-defendants to be sentenced in a scheme last year that aimed to buy marijuana from Mexico's Zetas cartel and then sell the cartel weapons. The planned killing was in addition to that scheme. Corley and other defendants unwittingly negotiated the crimes with agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Prosecutors say Corley agreed to perform the hit in Laredo for $50,000 and cocaine.
