Execution Date Set for Huntsville Prison Guard Killer

A death row inmate convicted of killing a Huntsville prison guard has received an execution date.

Jerry Martin is scheduled to die December 3 for the 2007 death of Susan Canfield, according to Walker County District Attorney Kevin Weeks. The 43-year-old Martin waived all his appeals.

Back in June, Weeks says Martin told a court his father had passed away earlier in the year, and the loss of someone so close to him made him want to give Canfield's family closure.

Martin and John Ray Falk escaped from a work detail in Huntsville, stole a vehicle, and ran into Canfield, who was on horseback.

A mistrial was declared in Falk's first capital murder trial early this year. A new trial is pending.
