While The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the accident, the outside southbound lane remains closed. TxDOT is helping with traffic control in this area. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction during this investigation. News 3 will let you know when the roadway is completely open.

A fatal accident occurred Tuesday on Highway 6 two miles south of Hearne near FM 2549 at 10:15 am.

According to law enforcement officials, the accident involved a 2007 Nissan Altima and an 18-wheeler carrying gravel. The driver of the Altima, 39-year old Charles Eric Wheatfall of Navasota died at the scene. The 18-wheeler driver, 58 year-old Billy Ray Higgins of College Station, was taken to St. Joseph with non-life threatening injures. The 18-wheeler is owned by Hubert Perez of Brenham.

Witnesses tell DPS the Nissan was northbound on Highway 6 when it crossed into the path of the southbound 18-wheeler. It appeared the driver of the Nissan, Wheatfall, was looking down and never tried to avoid the 18-wheeler.

Highway 6 is now partially open, and the investigation is ongoing.
