Finally ‘Johnny Football’ Speaks To Media

Updated: Wed 9:55 AM, Nov 28, 2012

Johnny Football Fever is taking over Aggieland, and for the first time, the star Texas A&M quarterback was made available to the media via teleconference.

A lot of people in the know believe Johnny Manziel is the top Heisman Trophy candidate, but he says he isn't focused on all the hype.

Number 2 is best known as Johnny Football, a nickname Johnny Manziel received at the start of his college football career.

"I think it's something that's funny. I think it's something that a lot of people here in Aggieland enjoy. It's something that I find extremely funny,” said Manziel.

Because of Head Coach Kevin Sumlin's rule for freshman players, Manziel hasn't been allowed to talk to the media, but after playing 12 games for Texas A&M, Manziel was made available to the national media for the first time officially via teleconference.

"It's kind of nice now to let you guys know how I am a little bit more since there are so many question marks out there,” Manziel said.

Manziel doesn't consider himself as a celebrity.

"I don't see myself as Johnny Football. I see myself as Johnathon Manziel. Just a small town guy from Kerrville that's just extremely blessed, extremely fortunate to play football here at A&M."

Manziel says he started playing football when he was 6 years old.

He played at Tivy High School in Kerrville. When asked who his inspiration was, the first person he named Coach Julius Scott.

“My high school coach I talk to every week. Me and him have great talks not only about football but we have times where we kind of need to get away from football."

Manziel says he's not concentrating so much on the sport right now. The business major is getting ready to take his finals.

A news conference will be held with Johnny Manziel tomorrow at 2 p.m. on the A&M campus.

We will air it live our sister station, CW-8 Aggieland and stream it on KBTX.com.
