Fire Forces 200 From Assisted Living Center

Authorities say a fire at an assisted living center forced the evacuation of some 200 people, many of them elderly.

One resident of the 10-story Westchester Plaza near downtown Fort Worth was treated for smoke inhalation Sunday. Firefighters arrived at the building about 6:45 a.m. and saw flames coming from the fourth floor.

Residents of the building were forced out into frigid, blustery weather with temperatures in the 30s.

Fire Lt. Carol Jones says the sprinkler system contained the flames to the apartment on the fourth floor where the fire began. The three-alarm fire was brought under control about 7:30 a.m.

Many residents were allowed to return to their apartments, but some were displaced.

A spokeswoman for the Red Cross said the agency provided blankets and other services to residents.
