Former Iola Volunteer Fire Official Pleads Guilty

IOLA - A portion of the $40,000 embezzled from the Iola Volunteer Fire Department should start heading to the fire house soon after a two-year wait.

Former VFD Secretary Samantha Kimich agreed to a plea bargain for 10 years deferred adjudication and restitution for a little more than $8,500.

She and her brother, former Chief Earl Sword, along with Sword's mother Wanda were charged with theft.

The three are alleged to have taken the $40,000 from March 2010 through February 2012.

With the money from this plea agreement, Iola's current chief says they'll be buying a new fire truck using it.
