WATCHES AND WARNINGS

Former Jefferson Award Winner Dies

Updated: Mon 10:37 PM, Apr 30, 2012

An Aggie, soldier and community volunteer honored with a Jefferson Award has died.

Jim Stegall passed away Friday at the age of 83.

A Robertson County native and member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of '49, he served in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry during the Korean War.

Besides serving as a school administrator, he was honored for his work outside the classroom when he earned a Jefferson Award in 2007. Among the reasons for the accolade were his efforts with Project Unity and on St. Joseph Hospital's board.

Of volunteering, Stegall said, "It's the heartbeat of a community the way I see it. If you don't have that and the volunteerism, if you don't have love in your community, I don't know what you got. If you have love, then people have a chance."

Visitation will be held May 7 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral services will be May 8 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Bryan.
