Traffic tie-ups are coming to Bryan's busiest street this weekend as contractors shut down Freedom Boulevard at the Briarcrest Drive intersection for the whole weekend.
Several local businesses are expecting to take a hit.
Driving in Bryan is getting more difficult and a busy weekend will bring detours to a major shopping area.
Freedom Boulevard is closing starting at 6:30 P.M. Friday at the Briarcrest Drive intersection so that construction crews can fix the pavement and median.
Casa Ole's main road and a number of other businesses have less access now. Waiter Francisco Tirado expects a slow evening but thinks travel will be better after the improvements.
"Probably going to be a crazy night. There's going to be a lot of people that doesn't know about that new stuff they are doing they are blocking the road and everything," said Francisco Tirado.
Taylor Matcek came to eat at Casa Ole but plans to steer clear of the area this weekend or at least plan ahead.
"It was good right now it wasn't too bad. Guess we'll see when they start," said Matcek.
The detour will last all weekend long with Freedom Boulevard not expected to reopen until 6:30 Monday morning.
Jewel Bradford is the Assistant Manager at Sonic and says business has already dropped some since construction began to widen Briarcrest Drive and add concrete medians.
"I saw the sign Monday and I was like oh no we're going to get hit this weekend," said Bradford.
She hopes people remember they're open.
"The construction will slow us down but we will be open until midnight over the weekend and please do come by, keep us going," she added.
Coming and going may be a tall order with none of us liking delays.
The Briarcrest Drive widening project is anticipated to cost $4.7 million and won't be finished until August 2013.
Access will still be available to Walmart, and the area restaurants on the south end of Freedom Boulevard, as well as side entrances and the Highway 6 access road.
TxDOT Press Release
BRAZOS COUNTY - Beginning at 6:30pm on Friday, October 26, 2012, the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) contractor will close the intersection of FM 1179 (Briarcrest Drive) and Freedom Boulevard in order to reconstruct the intersection pavement and median. This closure will be in affect from Friday evening until 6:30am on Monday, October 29, 2012.
TxDOT tries to minimize the inconvenience to motorists as much as possible, but there will be some inconvenience this weekend. Motorists who travel this area should expect delays, watch for construction workers and equipment and use extra caution during this closure.
Access to Wal-Mart and Chick-fil-a will be available by entering Freedom Boulevard on the south end of Cambridge Drive near Lowe's and First Baptist Church, from Oak Ridge Drive between Wal-Mart and the High School Football Stadium, and from the front entrance off Briarcrest between Chick-fil-a and the Bryan Recycling Center (near the Wal-Mart gas pumps).
Access to Sonic and Taco Cabana will continue to be available by the driveway off Briarcrest.
Access to Casa Ole and the Freedom Strip Center will be available from the Sonic/Taco Cabana driveway, the Wells Fargo driveway and the south end of Freedom Boulevard off Cambridge Drive.
This weekend closure of Freedom Boulevard is part of the $4.7 million dollar improvement project of FM 1179 contracted to Knife River Corporation. This project is to increase capacity and improve safety in this area. The entire project is anticipated to be complete in late August of 2013.
