Flores Responds to the State of the Union:
“President Obama’s State of the Union speech failed to address several key problems faced by our country. The most important of these is that his policies have created the weakest economic recovery in the seven decades since the Great Depression. This has resulted in stubbornly high unemployment and the lowest labor force participation rate since Jimmy Carter’s presidency. In addition, his polices have caused a huge decline in the economic opportunities for hardworking Americans and moved millions of families into poverty and onto food stamps. In a nutshell, his administration has dramatically increased income inequality while reducing economic opportunity.
"If the president had adopted economic policies similar to those of President Reagan, our country’s economy would have grown much faster and would have put over seven million more Americans back to work.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers says Republicans want to empower Americans, not the government, and to close the gap "between where you are and where you want to be."
The representative from Washington state delivered the response following President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.
She said it's Obama's policies that are making life harder for Americans, and that under those policies "more Americans stopped looking for a job than found one."
McMorris Rogers also said Obama's health care overhaul has led to canceled insurance coverage and patients unable to see their regular doctors.
She said the GOP believes "in a government that trusts people and doesn't limit where you finish because of where you started."
Rep. Bill Flores (R) of District 17 represents much of the Brazos Valley and areas West toward Waco. His reaction can be found listed on this page.
Rep. Kevin Brady (R) represents citizens in Walker and Montgomery County as the congressman for Texas's 8th District. He issued the following statement:
“Most Americans believe our country is headed in the wrong direction. What they heard from the President tonight was ‘stay the course’. Republicans have a more optimistic, more positive vision for America that builds up people rather than government. The President has stimulated Wall Street but left the middle class and Main Street behind. Republicans want to fix the broken tax code and rein in the IRS, remove the burden of ObamaCare on families and businesses, and get the economy moving so we can balance the budget and begin paying down America’s debt.
“Perhaps the starkest difference is on tax reform. The President wants to tax Texas energy companies and close tax loopholes so Washington can spend more. Republicans will stop tax increases on energy and close loopholes so we can lower tax rates for everybody and grow the economy.”
Republican Governor of Texas Rick Perry echoed criticism in a short prepared statement:
"“We didn’t hear much tonight from President Obama that we haven’t before, other than his intention to expand his own powers by bypassing Congress altogether. The strength of our Union is in our states, not Washington, and Texas has shown that the way to economic prosperity and significant job growth is through individual freedoms and the free market.
"Tonight, we saw a president with the same old agenda and no real idea on how to govern. Americans expect and deserve more from a president than continually broken promises and unfunded platitudes.”
