Galveston Bay fish Kill Blamed on Oxygen Depletion

SEABROOK, Texas (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have littered the Galveston Bay shoreline in the Kemah and Seabrook area along the Galveston and Harris county border.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials tell Houston TV station KTRK (http://abc13.co/1mfGNne ) that oxygen depletion is likely the reason for the fish kill that began appearing a week ago.

The silver fish are shad, also known as skipjack. They swim in large schools and primarily serve as bait fish for other wildlife.

Such oxygen-related fish kills are not uncommon but leave behind a stench.
