Brazos Valley Burn Bans: The following counties are under a Burn Ban: Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Lee, Leon, Madison, Milam, Robertson, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, Washington
HOUSTON - A 1,000 acre grassfire at a wildlife refuge is sending smoke across several Southeast Texas counties.
Fire crews with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Friday were battling the blaze at the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge, located about 90 miles east of Houston.
Agency spokeswoman Nancy Brown said officials were hopeful the fire would be contained by Saturday at the latest.
Brown says the fire was man made but the exact cause was not immediately known. The fire was not part of a controlled burn done by the agency.
Brown says no structures are in danger and the main concern from the blaze is the large amount of smoke, which was expected to move overnight into other parts of Southeast Texas, including the Houston area.
