Hempstead ISD is going red for women.
The School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) at Hempstead High School hosted the Go Red for Women Campaign on Thursday.
The American Heart Association created Go Red For Women to dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women.
Thursday employees and students all across the Hempstead school district wore red to show their support for the campaign.
The school's health science department and put on a hands-on Automated External Defibrillator (AED) lesson as well as a CPR Demonstration for students.
Students and teachers also declared who they are going "red" for by displaying the names of friends and loved ones on a specialized wall.
According to the American Heart Association, Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year.
