Members of community of Hempstead gathered together today to sign petitions, write letters and also made phone calls in protest of the construction of a new landfill along Highway 6 near Highway 290.

Representatives from the group claim that the out-of-state landfill company is reportedly paying Texas lobbyists one million dollars for the permit and transfer of the landfill to be inside the city limits.

Hempstead residents fear the landfill could decrease property values and have a negative environmental impact.
