The head of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee is meeting with Houston port officials and other Houston-area law enforcement representatives to discuss security at the port and the surrounding petrochemical complex.
U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul is a Houston-area Republican who chairs the committee. A Port of Houston Authority statement says he'll discuss port security and recent Middle East development that could influence national security with port, law enforcement and industry representatives on Wednesday.
The authority statement says the Port of Houston brings in more imports than any other U.S. harbor and moves the second highest level of all maritime tonnage. More than 8,000 vessels call at port annually, and about 25 percent of U.S. oil imports flow through the port.
