HOUSTON (AP) - Authorities say a reserve sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man outside a Houston-area pawn shop after the suspect opened fire on the deputy.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the reserve deputy wasn't hurt in Wednesday night's gunfire. The name of the man who died wasn't immediately released.
Workers at a pawn shop who feared a possible robbery summoned officers after a customer asked to see some expensive jewelry but had no required identification.
The reserve deputy arrived and asked the man for his ID. Authorities say the suspect retrieved a gun from his vehicle and opened fire. The deputy then shot the suspect twice.
The sheriff's office will investigate.
Reserve deputies are volunteers who receive law enforcement training and have the same legal authority as paid offi
