Spanish-speaking firefighters from around the world participated in a week of challenging, intense training at the Brayton Fire Training Field in College Station.

More than 700 firefighters enrolled in weeklong courses offered this year at the 46th annual Escuela para Bomberos en Español.

“These students want to be here. You see that glimmer in their eye. You see the excitement they have to be able to come to a facility like this,” said Robert Moore, Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Director.

Last year, more than 630 students took part in the 15 courses offered in firefighting, rescue and hazardous materials response.

The courses are taught entirely in Spanish by over 170 guest instructors and safety officers who volunteer their time to assist the TEEX staff.

“This is my third time here,” said Gabriel Rodriguez, Dominican Republic volunteer firefighter. “I was meant to be a firefighter. Even though I don't get paid for it, I like to do it, help people, and just have that rush in my life.”

Firefighters attending the school come from the United States and Puerto Rico, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. Countries represented include: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Spain, Venezuela and Equatorial Guinea.
