Inmate Dies at Brazos County Jail

An inmate has died at the Brazos County Detention Center of what appears to be natural causes. Melvin Earl Jones was arrested on August 2 and charged with Assault of a Public Servant.

Jones alerted detention officers around 5:45 a.m. that he needed to see a doctor and was taken to the jail’s medical department. While in a holding cell awaiting treatment, he vomited and collapsed, prompting an EMS evaluation. During the course of the evaluation, Jones went into cardiac arrest and was given CPR. He was immediately transported to St. Joseph by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead at 7:32 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death internally alongside an independent investigation by Texas Rangers. Both are standard procedures following a death in custody.
