Johnny Manziel Gets Uncle's Advice In Heisman Attire

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Johnny Manziel's uncle, Harley Hooper has been in the men's clothing business for over 40 years and runs a successful chain of men's clothing stores in College Station and Tyler. It's no surprise when the Heisman finalist needed to get dressed up that Uncle Harley would be Johnny's first call.

One of Harleys television commercials that airs in the Brazos Valley ask viewers, "So do I play it safe or bold?" The commercial tags out with "A Harley's man always bold."

And bold is one of the best words to describe Johnny Manziel's play on the field this season at Texas A&M. 4600 yards and 43 touchdowns this year. A new Southeastern Conference record for total offense in both a game and on the season.

The Heisman Trophy finalist will be dressing bold this week as he attends the College Football Awards on Thursday and Saturday will be in New York City awaiting the decision of the Heisman Trust.

Johnny has looked the part of a Heisman Trophy winner on the field and now his Uncle Harley Hooper is helping Johnny look the part on the awards circuit.

"Probably the most important person I've ever dressed for something this world wide," said Hooper.

There was no question in Johnny's mind when it came to dressing up this week who he would be seeking advice from.

"My uncle is one of the guys I looked up to. If I wanted to dress like somebody, I would dress like him every single day," added Manziel last week when ask about picking out a suit for this week's appearances in Orlando for the Home Depot College Football Awards and Saturday's Heisman Trophy ceremony. "He's one of the best dressers that I've had the privilege to be around," added the Heisman Finalist.

"Johnny and I have always had a great relationship and I never knew he looked at me as a fashion icon," continued Uncle Harley. "I went through school working at a store like this. It's all I've ever known so if I haven't picked up a few things by now it's probably a little too late."

Harley has a grey suit picked out for the College Football Awards show on Thursday.

"The grey suit are going to be accented with some color. We like color, but we're not going to go crazy."

And then for the Heisman presentation on Saturday Manziel and his uncle have agreed on a classic dark blue suit.

Of course Johnny is thinking about adding his own personal touch which his uncle is all for. In fact it may create a new line at both his men's clothing stores in College Station and Tyler.

"We're probably going to go look at that in New York in January just because of Johnny Manziel and Johnny Football," proudly stated Hooper. "Scooby Doo hadn't been one of the things that we'd been looking for until Johnny started wearing it. But we're probably going to have to have it."

The Heisman Trophy will be presented on Saturday evening from the Best Buy Theater in New York City. Television coverage of the event will begin at 7pm on ESPN.

Johnny and offensive lineman Luke Joeckel leave for Orlando and the College Football Awards on Wednesday. Johnny is a finalist for the Davey O'Brien, and Maxwell Awards to be presented on Thursday. Luke is a finalist for the Outland Award.

News 3 Sports will follow Johnny on his Road to the Heisman. KBTX Media's team coverage is being sponsored by Brenham Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and A-B-C Home and Commercial Services.
