AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Attorneys have asked the judge in Texas' sweeping school finance case to reopen evidence based on public education funding and curriculum changes the state Legislature made after he ruled.
More than 600 school districts have sued the state, claiming public education funding is inadequate and unfairly distributed. State District Judge John Dietz ruled in February that the way Texas funds schools is unconstitutional.
But in May, lawmakers restored $3.4 billion in school funding and eased high school graduation requirements.
On Wednesday, lawyers for some property-wealthy school districts asked for a hearing to determine the impact of the Legislature's actions. The case will eventually be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which may question the effects of what the Legislature approved.
Dietz plans to decide on the hearing in two weeks.
