Local businesses could see the economic impact from football season extend a little longer this year.
The Brazos Valley Bowl will pit two junior college football teams against each other next month at Kyle Field.
News 3 looked into what to expect at the inaugural bowl game and how it's projected to pump big money into the local economy.
Texans love their football and it's at the heart of so much of the economy in Bryan-College Station.
Coming December 1st 11th ranked Kilgore College will be taking on number 13 Northwest Mississippi Community College in the first ever Brazos Valley Bowl.
Ruben Cano is a manager at Newk's Express Café in College Station and looks forward to the estimated 6,000 plus people coming to Kyle Field.
"We do get a lot of business for the regular games so I can imagine that one will bring just as much business. We definitely welcome it," said Cano.
Blinn College is sponsoring the Bowl Game which could bring up to $1 million for the local economy. President Harold Nolte says not only do the two schools travel well but the Kilgore Rangerettes will perform at half time and area high school drill teams will showcase pre-game.
"You'll see these buses coming through in large groups and they'll be eating at your eateries, they'll be at your hotels, and be doing other things," said Harold Nolte, Ed.D.
Tickets are already on sale and it's probably the most affordable bowl game you could ever go to. It's free to get in for fans 18 and under as well as students with a college ID. For everyone else it's $5.
"We hope that this experience for all of the students that will be attending, the student athletes their families that they will go back and say this is the bowl to come to. This is the place to come to. We’re coming to College Station every year from here on out," said Sylvia McMullen Brazos Valley Bowl Director of Operations.
"What’s exciting for Blinn College here is we’ll get to expose folks across the Brazos Valley and as far away as Mississippi to the benefits of a two year college and what we can provide," said Ted Raspiller, Ed.D., President of Blinn College Brazos County campuses.
The showdown between the Kilgore College Rangers and Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers will start a new tradition at this Kyle Field's Saturday shrine filled with history.
Kickoff is set for noon on Saturday, December 1 at Kyle Field.
$25,000 from the College Station Hotel Occupancy Tax Funds are helping launch the event this first year.
