Thousands of people are hitting area lakes this weekend for the unofficial start of summer and it's a prime time for boating accidents and injuries on the water.

News 3 was on Lake Bryan Saturday afternoon where game wardens are staying busy keeping people safe.

It's one of the biggest weekends of the year out at the lake and full days of fun under the sun. And for many weekenders that means alcohol too.

"Do you have your driver's license? Let me see it real quick," asked Leanne Winkenwerder, who was patrolling Lake Bryan.

With summer on the horizon the waters of Lake Bryan are filled with boaters, and swimmers on a weekend getaway.

It's Leanne Winkenwerder's job to keep them safe.

She's a Game Warden for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and is doing safety checks on Lake Bryan.

"When we stop a boat 99 percent of the people are glad that we are out here because they have children and they want to boat safely and they are glad to see us out," she said.

They check for things like having enough life jackets with kids 12 and under required to wear them in the boat. They also make sure boat drivers haven't had too much to drink.

"Any alcohol in the boat...? None at all," she asked.

\With thousands of people out at the lake for the holiday weekend game wardens tell us so far only some minor citations have been issued.

Meanwhile College Station boater Haylee Feti was making sure her friends and family stayed safe in the water.

"Yeah we have life jackets and we keep an eye on them all the time. We have water to drink," said Feti.

"Lake Bryan is probably the most fun I've ever had…. This is our first time out here and it's pretty fun," said Selen Ates, of College Station.

"Are y'all 21? All right, remember the driver can drink he just can't be intoxicated. Ok y'alll be careful," said Winkenwerder after a safety check.

Around a dozen minor citations ended up being issued Saturday including several instances of not enough life jackets in the boat.

According to Boat U.S. alcohol plays a factor in 50 percent of all boating accidents.

Game wardens were also out until the evening hours to make sure everyone was off the lake by dark, which is a city ordinance.

The last reported drowning on Lake Bryan happened in June of last year.

News 3 learned late Saturday night one person was arrested on the lake for intoxication.

It's one of the biggest weekends of the year out at the lake and full days of fun under the sun and for many weekenders that means alcohol too.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Warden performed safety checks throughout the day and let News 3 come along for the ride.

Across the state law enforcement is looking to make sure boaters have plenty of life jackets with kids under 13 wearing them.

And they are also on the lookout to make sure drivers have not had too much to drink while out boating.

So far this weekend game wardens at Lake Bryan have only written a few minor citations.

According to Boat U.S., alcohol plays a factor in 50 percent of all boating accidents.

There have not been any drownings on Lake Bryan this year.
