PREVIOUS STORY:

KBTX has heard that there are reports of a large acid spill at Crosswind Drive and Highway 21 in Bryan. This is very close to Coulter Airport.

Initial reports coming from emergency responders say that 200-300 gallons of hydrochloric acid have spilled in the area and that it may have contaminated an area of up to 3 football fields in size.

Hydrochloric acid is used in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, and dyes and is corrosive to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.

The acid spilled in a pit near Crosswood Oilfield. Crews have now dug a dam to keep the acid from spilling out any further.

Evacuations are taking place in the area a half mile radius around the spill. Emergency crews have asked anyone located close to the spill to stay indoors. Vapors from the acid is now the main concern.

Crosswind Drive is shut down and traffic is being diverted.

A crew is on the way to the scene. Stay with KBTX for the latest information.
