BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) The three surviving children of a Mexican woman who lawyers say was wrongly deported and later killed in Mexico by her abusive ex-boyfriend are suing the U.S. government.
Lawyers from Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid and the South Texas Civil Rights Project filed the civil rights lawsuit Wednesday in federal court in Brownsville. The suit targets still unidentified Department of Homeland Security agents who they say deported the woman they identify only as 22-year-old Laura S.
According to the lawsuit, the agents deported her to Reynosa, Mexico, hours after a routine traffic violation, in spite of her pleas that her ex-boyfriend would harm her. She had obtained a protective order against him in Texas.
The lawsuit says that within days, her ex-boyfriend found, abducted and strangled her in Reynosa.
