Local Brewery Expanding Thanks To Popularity

Updated: Wed 7:20 PM, Sep 12, 2012

Making beer is a serious business.

But a couple of guys from College Station have taken on that challenge and their beer as been the toast of the town.

"No, it doesn't surprise me because I know we make good beer," said owner Dean Brundage with a big smile.

Brundage and John Januskey started the New Republic Brewery in 2010 and in that short amount of time, they've already outgrown their production capacity of 70 barrels a year.

"The last two years have been great," said Januskey.

Business has been so good for the former computer programmers that they now brew beer full time. Their two styles of beer, the Bellows Amber Ale and the Skylight Dunkelweizen, are popular pints at local restaurants. So much so that demand for their special suds is growing faster than a beer belly and that's why they're expanding to a bigger location.

"There's no better time to be a craft brewer in Texas," said Brundage.

"Now we're moving up to a new scale with the brewery so that we can get into a lot of additional bars and restaurants and start working the Houston markets," said Januskey.

Despite an economy that just seems to be getting by, beer sales are sky high.

"People drink when the economy is good and they drink when the economy is bad so it's kind of a bullet proof place to be. We'd really prefer people to drink our beer because they're happy," said Januskey.

"It's an affordable luxury that you can afford when you're down and out or making a lot of money," said Brundage.

The new New Republic Brewery will expand their brewing capabilities 20 fold meaning they'll brew up to 5,000 barrels of beer and they plan on canning their beer by the end of the year.

"It's important for us to get into the grocery stores and the convenient stores," said Brundage.

It's the next step for the New Republic Brewery as they continue to craft their craft beer here in Aggieland.

The New Republic Brewery is holding a kickstarter campaign to help with their expansion. You can donate to the brewery and in return get voting rights on seasonal beers as well as some New Republic Beer gear. We've got the link to the New Republic Web kick-starter campaign below.
