Firefighters from Bellmead, Waco and Lacy Lakeview still were at the scene at sunrise Monday battling a major building blaze that started just before 2 a.m.

Texas Meter and Device, located at 1509 New Dallas Highway, between Behrens Circle and Hogan Lane, had virtually burned to the ground.

New Dallas Highway, also called old U.S. 77, was closed to traffic in both directions at 7 a.m. and the fire still was burning, pouring plumes of heavy black smoke into the air that could be seen from miles away.

The Bellmead Fire Chief said firefighters believe there was no one inside the building when the fire started and no firefighters had been injured.

There was no indication of how the fire started.
