Sixth graders at Oakwood Intermediate School in College Station created cars powered with carbon dioxide.

In the school cafeteria science is put to the test
Almost 400 students race-off to the finish line.

Steven Ray, a sixth grader is aiming to receive a grade of an A.

"I think I'll get a hundred because I put all my effort into it and I try my best," said Ray.

The students built and designed CO2 cars to test the force of motion and calculate speed and distance.

A CO2 canister is placed in the back of the wooden car. The launcher has a nail that hits into the canister and punctures the cartridge, which makes the car travel down the track.

Some of the cars take off so fast at 30 to 35 miles per hour that we had to slow down the video to show the cars going by.

Shawna McDermott, a science teacher gets energized with her students.

"It gives them a sense of accomplishment. They actually produce a product and some of these kids have never built anything
before and this is the very first thing they built," said McDermott.

One student says her dad is an engineer and after this project she might become one too.

"When we started off, we had just a block of wood and we had to shave it down to a size like this and put the wheels on it and everything,"said Amanda Schlueter.

For students Race Day is a chance to have fun and apply math, science and physics all together.

The school tried the science project for the first time last year and it was so successful that they plan to keep on racing into the future.
