AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A man charged in the death of an Austin police officer has pleaded not guilty to capital murder, clearing the way for his case to head to trial.
The Austin American-Statesman reports 26-year-old Brandon Daniel pleaded not guilty Monday in Travis County district court in the death of Officer Jaime Padron. Jury selection is set to start Jan. 6.
Authorities say after the 40-year-old officer responded in April to reports of a disturbance involving a drunk man at a Walmart, the suspect tried to run and the officer chased him. Authorities say in the ensuing tussle, the suspect produced a semi-automatic pistol and shot Padron.
Defense attorneys told the judge they had tried to reach a settlement in the case.
