BELTON, Texas (AP) - A former soldier at Fort Hood has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend with a machete in an attack that occurred with the woman's 6-year-old son nearby.

David Michael Vega pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday and was sentenced later in the day. The Killeen Daily Herald reports ( the 29-year-old Vega attacked Danielle Acosta-Guerrero last August at her Killeen home.

Police say Acosta-Guerrero was found in her home with multiple lacerations. The machete was found near her body. Her son was in the home but escaped serious injury.

A passer-by and a neighbor went to the home after hearing screams and Vega came to the door with blood on his face.
