BRYAN- For College Station Mayor Nancy Berry, service to the community isn't just a job, it's a lifestyle. Berry won the Jefferson Award in 2012 for her work with the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity and numerous other organizations.
"It was very humbling," Berry said.
She was blown away by the honor.
"I was totally surprised and then that evening when it was announced I was just flabbergasted," she said.
Even more shocking for Berry, she was then selected to represent the Brazos Valley at the national Jefferson Awards Ceremony in Washington, DC.
"It says a lot about our community, about the people who get nominated every year," she said. "Every one of them is stellar and could easily have won the award, so I am pleased to be in that group."
Today she continues to serve the community by sitting on the boards of both the College Station ISD Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club.
"If we want the place to be better we've got to help make it better and I think those of us who have the time and the energy ought to do what they can do to make the community better because we all live here," she said.
She wants to make sure other deserving volunteers are honored.
"I think recognizing community service is an excellent opportunity to showcase our region's best," she said.
So she is considering nominating them herself and encourages other residents to do the same.
"If you know someone in your life that has made a difference in our community, absolutely nominate them," she said.
Because these silent heroes should not go unnoticed.
