Mayor's Race, Astrodome Fate Before Houston Voters

HOUSTON (AP) - Voters in Houston are deciding whether Mayor Annise Parker deserves a final two-year term and are having their say on whether the Harris County-owned Houston Astrodome should be renovated or torn down.

Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart is expecting about 100,000 voters to cast ballots Tuesday. That would be less than the 109,000 who already voted in early balloting that ended Friday. The early total in Texas' most populous county is a record for elections with no national or statewide offices at stake.

The countywide Astrodome proposal would approve up to $217 million in bonds to turn the now-closed stadium into a convention center.

Parker, meanwhile, is facing a field of eight challengers, with her strongest opponent being former city attorney Ben Hall.
